Network and cable news guest bookers have been under fire from social media since the southern border of the United States became the scene of the story that (unsurprisingly) is defining the Biden administration.
After four years of full-contact punditry and news-as-bloodsport, guests on top political news shows have come off as stale and uninformed on immigration. Worse, the default for many milktoast ‘generalists’ in the talking-head-sphere is to repeat Stephen Miller talking points when asked to weigh in on immigration.
Not to name names, but the shitshow of bad immigration guests has especially been true in primetime where even…

Tbh, I’m just tired of pitching great stories to publications too poor, too busy, or too visionless to bite. …
Every new day of the Biden-Harris White House has a theme. Covid, Climate, Equity, Health Care, and so on. Today the new White House team is set to announce more details of the new administration’s agenda on immigration. I’m excited. Here’s why —
The Biden White House is the first in recent memory that doesn’t begin with a law enforcement wishlist as the federal immigration policy portfolio’s top priority.
Instead, the new administration is…
Joe Biden’s presidential transition team named Esther Olavarria this week as the new incoming deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council overseeing immigration.
I don’t know Esther, but a colleague out west reminded me this morning of a statement Olavarria, a former aide to the late-Senator Edward Kennedy, made to the New York Times toward the end of Barack Obama’s 2nd term.
The administration has defended this approach as a means of discouraging future asylum seekers from coming to the United States. “The decision to establish family detention facilities was in large part driven by the need to…
Settling on three resolutions to declare each December 31st (or before, usually) is a personal tradition I’ve kept since boyhood. This year is no different. That said, without further ado, after much consideration, these are my three resolutions for the Chinese Year of the Ox, 2021 —
Snark was my jab and meanness was my uppercut during the bitter election year of national reckoning in 2020. No más in the new year. Anger is exhausting. Plus, kindness gets more likes anyway.
“The world in which Facebook operates is fickle.”
When Democrats hold their presidential primary debates this year, two political heavies from 2016 may be absent from the stage — Fox News and Facebook.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez announced last Wednesday that Fox News will not get a debate during the current election cycle.
Neither the Republican nor Democratic parties will say on the record whether or not Facebook will be a presidential debate partner this time around. The DNC has sanctioned twelve debates, partnering with CNN and NBC on the first two. …

OPINION | A decade ago, my first job in Washington politics was waiting tables at “an establishment bar” on Capitol Hill a short walk from the House side of the Capitol. The bar’s management offered night-shift employees a side hustle killing rats for eight dollars per carcass.
Capitol Hill is infested with rats. Each shift I collaborated with two Honduran colleagues to trap entire gatherings of vermin convened in the bar’s kitchen, or out back by the sink for cleaning mops. …
In January my New Year’s Resolutions were:
1. Be the nicest.
2. Be the fittest.
3. Book the most women on TV.
So far, I feel great about #2 & #3. The trickiest has been #1. If anything this year I’ve been downright ornery at times. Nearing the year’s home stretch I realize I’ve been setting the wrong intention during almost-daily yoga regimen that’s made me the fittest in 2018 (ie. #2).
See, I’ve been focusing on “finding positivity” in a time of collapsing American optimism, which isn’t quite the same as “being the nicest”. It’s time to reset my focus with a new intention — being the nicest, per my topline new year’s resolution for 2018. Namaste.
France should win the World Cup Final. Les Bleus are definitely the better team, having come out strong and improved with each game in World Cup Russia.
Overall, France was the second-youngest team in the World Cup Russia, after Nigeria and followed by England. Against Argentina, France’s Kylian Mbappe became the youngest player to score two goals in the World Cup since Pele. Mbappe is just 19 years old. Paul Pogba is 25. Antoine Griezmann is barely 27. …
Yesterday the following story ran under my new byline in CQ magazine with the headline “We’re Not Sure How She Got In Here, Mr. President”. Full Text:
President Donald Trump has threatened to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that his predecessor, Barack Obama, created to shield some unauthorized immigrants from deportation. But he may be taking a softer line on undocumented immigrants visiting the White House than Obama did.
